State Farmers Market

The market’s Farmers Building has 30,000 square feet where North Carolina farmers sell produce, plants and other items from their own farms, according to the department’s shop the market page. Plants arrive in March and local fruit and vegetables are sold through the growing season. The grounds also hold a garden center, restaurants and a wholesale truckers’ building.

Getting there: from I-40, take Exit 297 for Lake Wheeler Road and head northeast; the market is on the left in about half a mile, the department says. School and group visits can be arranged by calling ahead.

Midtown Farmers Market

More than 35 vendors sell bread, desserts, produce, nuts, dairy, meat and crafts on the Commons at North Hills, according to the market. It accepts SNAP/EBT: buy market bucks with your card at the information tent, and the market matches EBT purchases dollar for dollar up to $30. The market lists two special dates this fall: Boos & Brews on Saturday, Oct. 31, the last regular market of the season, and a holiday market on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Raleigh City Farm

Raleigh City Farm is a nonprofit urban farm at the corner of Franklin and Blount streets, founded in 2011, with a second site at Marsh Creek Park, according to the farm. Its farmstand is pay-what-you-can: produce carries a suggested price, and shoppers can pay that or pay less, no questions asked. The farm says it has no parking of its own.
