Fireworks at home: the law
North Carolina allows only a narrow set of consumer fireworks: sparklers and hand-held or ground-based sparkling devices that do not explode, spin or leave the ground, under the state’s pyrotechnics law. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles and other aerial fireworks need a permit. The N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal urges people to leave fireworks to the professionals. Over the 2026 holiday the office counted 27 fireworks-related incidents statewide, three deaths and more than $4.3 million in damage, according to its July 13 report.
What this means for you
- Plan on the shuttle, not the car: Dix Park closes to vehicles on July 4.
- Sign up for the city’s text alerts on the day for traffic and weather.
- Leave aerial fireworks to the city’s show; they are illegal at home without a permit.
