In its last published Labor Day notice, the city said the holiday “will not affect Solid Waste Services’ residential curbside collection.” Carts should be at the curb by 6 a.m. on your usual day (2024 Labor Day notice).

The Raleigh Yard Waste Center, 900 N. New Hope Road, closes for the whole holiday weekend. Its posted closings were Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 in 2025 and Sept. 5-7 in 2026; no loads are taken and no mulch or compost is sold (Yard Waste Center page). The last weekend of summer

  • Splash pads. The free splash pads at John Chavis Memorial Park, Moore Square and Gipson Play Plaza at Dorothea Dix Park run 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily from April to October, weather permitting, so they are open over the holiday weekend (splash pad page).
  • Pools. The four summer pools (Biltmore Hills, Lake Johnson, Longview and Ridge Road) list themselves as closed until summer 2027, and Lake Johnson Pool is being renovated. The indoor pools, including Pullen Aquatic Center, run year-round. Details are on our summer camps and pools page.
  • Lake Wheeler Park. The city lists September hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and boat rentals run through Wake Rack (Lake Wheeler Park page). Low water closed the ramps to trailered boats from late August 2026; hand-carried boats could still launch. Call the park before you tow a boat out.
  • Greenways. More than 100 miles of city trails are open dawn to dusk; see our parks and trails guide.

Friday night high school football is underway by Labor Day; see our Friday night football guide.
